I've been working with Carrara since the RayDream days both for professional and personal work. The new Morph Target feature and the ability to add sound in Carrara 4 was the impetus for this project. It's my first time at attempting to model a likeness of anyone as well as my first attempt at lip syncing. Finding some good Arnold Schwarzenegger sound files and images online was fairly easy.
I sketched a frontal and side view of the bust of Arnold as Conan. The images were placed as maps on the vertical grids in the Amapi modeler. I started the model with a sphere, deleted 1/2 the sphere vertically and mirrored the remaining 1/2 with the Symmetry tool with the Cloning option. Since the head is symmetrical, I could add and adjust vertices on one side and have the changes reflect in the other. All polygons were kept as quads.

Once my model began the look like the sketches, I exported it as .obj to preserve the quad polygons and opened it in C4 to test it. I smoothed it in the Model room and assigned bones in the Assemble room. A few bones movement tests showed where changes needed to be made back in Amapi. Once they were made, the revised model replaced the previous one in C4 with the original bones structure intact. The eyeballs and teeth were made children to their corresponding bones.

When the model was sufficiently pose-able, I began the process of experimenting with morph targets for the eyelids, brows and lips. Some good resources can be found online that illustrate the most common lip and tongue placements for speech. A search for phonemes will provide a few. The morph targets can be named according to the speech they portray. In the Model room, I selected and saved these same groups of vertices as shader domains for the mouth and eyelids. In the Shader room, a skin shader with a reddish color for the lids and mouth with slightly different values for the highlight and shine to suggest moisture was created.

The sound file was opened in sound editing software where I could generally establish when each syllable was spoken on the timeline. It was then dropped into the Carrara4 timeline where the morph target fun began.

Lastly, I took advantage of the new Realistic Sky feature and rendered Conan speaking in the great Cimmerian outdoors.
